Avalanche Skills Training 2 (AST2) provides a framework for decision-making in intermediate avalanche terrain based on the most advanced knowledge available. It has been developed to meet the needs of individuals with a moderate level of training and experience. In addition, this course introduces the prerequisites for further avalanche training and presents the Canadian Avalanche Association’s professional training program as the accepted industry standard for continuing at an advanced level.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Use the Avaluator™ as a decision-making tool to determine when additional planning and safe travel techniques are required;
- Be familiar with techniques for checking avalanche danger rating ranging from personal use to local scale;
- Be familiar with the technical model of the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale as a personal means of developing local terrain ratings;
- Use route selection to take advantage of terrain nuances and manage personal risk;
- Use avalanche terrain travel techniques appropriate to avalanche conditions;
- Be able to perform a companion rescue with a high level of competence;
- Understand the limitations of their training.
*AST1 is a prerequisite for AST2. Participants will receive 8 hours of classroom training and spend the rest of the course in the field.
