The daily process

7. Reflect on your day

After the Trip

At the end of an exciting and safe day on the mountain, you’re back at the car, truck, trailhead, or hut. On the way home or as you share a meal or a drink, take the opportunity to reflect on your day. Talk about how it went, and look at the positives and negatives.

Après-ski is an excellent time to review the highlights and not-so-glorious moments of the day, and to discuss the good decisions that were made and those that could be improved.

Ask yourselves, “when did we make good decisions?” and “when did we get lucky?”. Discuss times when you believe the group took too many risks, as well as times when you believe you made the right decisions. Try to find ways to do better next time.

Finally, share your observations through the Mountain Information Network. You don’t need to be an expert to do so. Even a photo and conditions report is valuable for your colleagues, and the forecasters who are preparing the public avalanche bulletins.
