3. Check your Gear

BEFORE THE TRIP

An avalanche transceiver, probe, and shovel are essential pieces of equipment that every member of a group should carry when traveling in the backcountry. You should carry them with you at all times.

An avalanche transceiver, commonly known as an avalanche beacon, is an electronic device that transmits and receives signals. When in “transmit” mode, it emits a constant signal that can be detected by other transceivers. If you or a member of your group is buried by an avalanche, the other members of the group switch their transceivers to “search” mode to try to locate the victim. The transceiver should be worn close to the body, under outer layers of clothing, and kept at least 20 cm away from any metal objects or other electronic devices when in “transmit” mode, and 50 cm away when in “search” mode.

A probe is a long, collapsible rod used to locate a victim buried under snow after conducting an avalanche transceiver search. Keep your probe in your backpack and, when needed, assemble the sections as you would with a tent pole.

A shovel is essential when digging to rescue a victim from an avalanche. It has a removable shaft, making it easier to carry in your bag. Your shovel must be made of metal, as a plastic shovel is not strong enough to dig through avalanche debris.

Before you travel, it is important to ensure everyone in your group has all the essential equipment and knows how to use these tools. Avalanche transceiver batteries should be at at least 40%, or the manufacturer’s recommended minimum for a normal one-day outing. At the trailhead, ensure everyone’s transceivers are switched on and in transmit mode.
